Abdijpoort Westmalle

Westmalle Abbey shop: where tradition and hospitality come together

Rooted in the tradition of the Trappist order, Westmalle Abbey is a place of silence, seclusion and contemplation, but it is also a place of hospitality. All this comes together in the shop at the abbey gate, where visitors will find a selection of authentic products that reflect the abbey’s values.

Trappistproducts

In the abbey shop, visitors will find a range of home-made Trappist products. These include Trappist cheese, made with care and craftsmanship in the abbey’s cheese dairy. This cheese is available in three varieties, each with its own flavour and texture, depending on the period of maturation. Fresh eggs from the abbey farm are also available. And for those who want to take a tangible souvenir of their visit, postcards are available.

The famous Trappist beer is not for sale here. You have to go to the brewery shop for that, or you can try it at the Café Trappisten a few hundred metres away.

Artisanal products from other Trappist abbeys

In addition to its own products, the abbey shop also sells a selection of artisanal products from other abbeys. For example, visitors can enjoy jams made by the Trappist nuns of Klaarland in Bocholt. Prepared with dedication and the best ingredients according to traditional recipes. Also available are TRAPP soaps and body care products from the Trappistines of Brecht, carefully formulated and enriched with natural ingredients. Candles, paternosters and a limited selection of religious books are also available. These books by and about writers from the monastic tradition have been selected by Brother Guerric.

Spiritual dimension

The abbey gate acts as a symbolic bridge between the outside world and life within the monastery walls. It is open to anyone seeking for peace, reflection and spirituality. This is where you enter not only to visit the abbey shop, but also to attend a service or visit a brother. It is also where you register for your retreat. In the words of St Benedict’s Rule, which guides monastic life: “All who arrive are welcomed as Christ.”
