True prayer is not only praying at the explicit prayer times. The monks’ tradition is one of ‘continual prayer’. It comes down the fact that they have to pray at all times. Praying then means an endless attempt to live in the presence of God, and on the basis of that presence, for everything that they do.
The set prayer times accentuate the ‘prayer of life’. They are the ‘foreground experience’ of it. And they remember that every event - however insignificant - can be a privileged moment of a meeting with God. For that purpose they have to live attentively, and consciously.
By living well, life itself becomes prayer!
