The times of the Eucharist, the prayer times and meals are fixed. In between the monks have to arrange their time themselves. Someone who cannot read or do personal prayer in the morning because of work for example, does it at a different time of day. The silent times during the day can be used for this purpose. These silent times are moreover intended for reading and silent personal prayer. Aside from the necessary activities, the intervals on Sundays - on the advice of Saint Benedict - are entirely dedicated to reading, individual reflection, meditation or personal prayer in silence.
